Ukiyoe Heroes by Jed Henry
Got my very first taste of ink today. It was way more painful than I expected, but it was definitely worth it. Big thanks to @adaamzo at California Kings Tattoo for his patience and incredible talent.
The reason I got this tattoo is because of Jon Pham. This is the tattoo he wanted to get, but never got a chance to. I got it in the exact location he intended to as well, on my right calf. The Daruma is a Japanese luck idol: when you make a wish or goal, the first eye is filled in. Upon achieving the goal, the second eye is filled in. The kanji reads “hisshou,” which translates to a determination to win.
It just seemed fitting to get this on Memorial Day, a few days before his one year of passing. I will never forget you, Jon, but this will forever remind me to strive to be as great of a person as you.
